For instance, the manufacturing sector provides a striking example of how leading firms are 5.4 times more productive than others. Academic researchers have documented similar trends that show major differences between leading firms and others, particularly in information and communication services.

The large productivity inequality between sectors is deepening. Our research shows that the gap within the manufacturing sector was 25% greater in 2019 than in 1989. Some analysts suggest that this growing gap is the result of the acceleration of growth among leading firms alongside the stagnation of others. In fact, if laggards catch up to leaders, they could restore the US’s productivity growth to historical levels.

These productivity differences also show that firms can raise their own targets. Doing more with less or the same resources translates into higher margins and stronger revenue growth for corporate income statements. Thus, the total impact of these performance improvements carries the potential to bring about economy-wide changes in productivity.

Lessons that can be learned from high-productivity firms

There is much that business leaders who want to improve their performance can learn by observing companies at the top of the productivity scale. These leading firms are usually larger than others in most sectors and geographies (although not always, as discussed below). They share a strategy plan that includes the following four elements:

Our research from 1989 to 2019 indicates a strong correlation between a sector’s productivity growth and its level of digitalization. Other researchers have found a similar connection between firm productivity and digitalization: leading firms are more innovative in technology than their peers.
